Inside the platform

Topstep platform

Topstep is the longest-running major futures prop firm in the retail market, founded in 2012 in Chicago by Michael Patak. Its three-stage path runs Trading Combine evaluation, Express Funded Account simulated funded, then a Live Funded Account on FCM-backed real capital. Over the past 12 months I have run 6 Topstep Combines on the 50K size with multiple payouts realized; TopstepX is the platform I prefer here. The 90/10 profit split from dollar one for new sign-ups, plus a first payout with no profit floor under the April 2026 payout system, are the structural reasons Topstep stays in my rotation despite the unforgiving real-time MLL monitoring (the floor moves end-of-day, but unrealized wicks count).

What I like / could be better

What I Like
  • Longest continuous operating record in retail futures prop, founded in 2012.
  • TopstepX proprietary platform with TradingView drawing tools built into its charts, 50+ futures, The Tilt sentiment indicator, and personal discipline tools (trade limits, account lockout, custom DLLs).
  • No profit floor on the first payout since the April 28, 2026 payout rework, with per-request caps of 50% of balance up to size-based limits and a $125 minimum payout.
  • Real Live Funded Account stage backed by FCM execution via Plus500US, a genuine simulated-to-live progression that most peer firms do not publicly run.
  • 90/10 profit split from $1 of profit on every Combine sign-up after January 12, 2026.
  • Acquisition of The Futures Desk on April 1, 2026 brings new tech and trader-development assets into TopstepX.
  • Reset Credit Bank for monthly subscribers, every renewal adds one Reset Credit matched to the account size and path, no per-reset fee scramble.
  • Prop-to-Brokerage, Aeropay, Wise, ACH, and Wire/SWIFT available as payout rails. Wise has cleared reliably for me as an international trader.
  • Published 2025 cohort transparency: 16.8% Combine pass rate, 51.8% Combine-to-Funded advance, 33.3% of Funded Level traders received payouts.
  • FCM partnership through Plus500US powers the Topstep Brokerage retail product, an additional credibility signal that pure-prop firms cannot match.
What Could Be Better
  • Trading Combine runs real-time MLL monitoring that can break the account on an unrealized wick, less forgiving than EOD-trailing alternatives.
  • Trustpilot rating sits at 3.6/5 across 14,532 reviews (August 2, 2026), the lowest of the PTV-mature firms (Lucid 4.5-4.6, Tradeify 4.6, FundedNext 4.5, YRM 3.7).
  • No PTV affiliate program, traders cannot use a VIBES-style discount on sign-up. Value comes from track record, not a code.
  • Monthly subscription pricing stacks against the trader during long evaluations, while peers like YRM, MyFundedFutures, and Apex 4.0 are moving toward one-time-fee structures.
  • VPN is absolutely banned. Connection through a VPN triggers a 403 Forbidden error, and the policy has no grey zone.
  • TopstepX is the only platform on offer. Quantower can connect with TopstepX credentials on the Combine and Express Funded Account, but traders who want a different execution stack have no route.
  • Live Funded selection rate is 0.71% of XFA traders in the 2025 cohort, the simulated-to-live transition is rare in practice.
  • Restricted countries list is aligned with US OFAC and broader sanctions, international traders face friction at signup.
  • Apex, Tradeify, and YRM are moving toward trader-friendlier rule sets and one-time-fee pricing, leaving Topstep's monthly model exposed to competitive pressure.

On the $50K Combine since 2023, recurring payouts via Wise

I started trading Topstep in 2023 on the $50K Combine. Since then I have passed multiple Combines on that size, run them through to Express Funded Accounts, and received multiple payouts across 6 Combines over 12 months via Wise. Topstep was one of my first futures props alongside Apex, and the firm anchored my early simulated funded experience before the YRM Prop, Tradeify, and Lucid Trading entries reshaped the broader 2026 market.

Why the $50K Combine has been my home. The $49 monthly fee plus the $3,000 profit target gives a focused trader meaningful runway without the larger DLL pressure of the $100K and $150K Combines. The 5-mini contract limit on $50K is enough to express a directional view on ES, NQ, or CL, and the personal DLL inside TopstepX lets me set a tighter day-ender than the optional $1,000 checkout DLL when discipline is the goal. The MLL is the rule that defines my execution. The floor itself only moves at the end of each day, but a breach counts in real time on unrealized P&L, so I size every trade against the current floor, not against hope: a clean unrealized wick can still break the account even if I would close green. I bank profits on strong days rather than letting them ride into reversals.

TopstepX has been my preferred platform. The browser-native experience, the TradingView drawing tools in the charts, and quick contract sizing make it the Topstep platform I default to. The Tilt sentiment indicator is a curiosity I check before opens but rarely act on as a primary signal. The personal Daily Loss Limits and trade limits inside TopstepX are the discipline tools I actually use, those features pre-set my session and remove the temptation to override risk after a bad open.

ProjectX nostalgia. I miss ProjectX. It was my entry into Topstep alongside the original NinjaTrader integration, and the 2026 ProjectX cutoff for third-party firms felt like the end of an era for me. The April 1, 2026 acquisition of The Futures Desk was a smart counter-move, the TFD tech is being integrated into TopstepX with the goal of filling the gap, but the transition is real and traders mid-Combine on the older platform stack felt the disruption.

Why I stayed despite years of churn pressure. The newer entries in the 2026 market (YRM Prop, Tradeify, Lucid Trading, Apex 4.0) are structurally interesting: one-time fees, EOD-trailing drawdown, lower-friction sign-ups. Topstep's monthly subscription stacks against me when I run a long Combine, the real-time MLL monitoring is unforgiving, and the Trustpilot rating is honestly rough on first read. But the first payout carries no profit floor under the current cap system, the Wise payout rail clears reliably, the Live Funded Account is a genuine progression layer for traders who reach it, and the long track record buys peace of mind that newer firms cannot match yet. Topstep stays in my rotation as the incumbent slot, the firm where I take steady $50K Combine cycles for known mechanics, while the YRM and Lucid slots cover the one-time-fee evaluation experiments.

What I have not tested personally. Four things, and the specs for them in this review come from Topstep's published Help Center documentation rather than my account history:

  • $100K and $150K Combines. I have run $50K only.
  • The Live Funded Account. My XFA cycles have not advanced to the 0.71%-of-cohort Live transition.
  • The Express Funded Account Consistency Path that launched February 5, 2026. My earlier XFA cycles ran on the Standard Path.
  • The post-January-12-2026 grandfathering edge cases. My account history is on the older 100%-first-$10K structure for accounts that pre-date the change.

Trading Combine, the one-step evaluation

The Trading Combine is the entry point for every Topstep trader. Three sizes available on the Standard Path monthly subscription with a $149 activation fee triggered at pass (a No-Activation-Fee Path with higher monthly pricing and no activation fee is also available). Adding a Daily Loss Limit at checkout triggers the Responsible Trading Discount, which recurs monthly and takes $10 off the $50K, $20 off the $100K and $30 off the $150K No-Activation-Fee monthly price:

SizeMonthly feeActivation feeProfit targetMaximum loss limitDaily loss limitMax contracts
$50K $49 Standard / $95 No Activation Fee ($85 with a DLL) $149 Standard / $0 No Activation Fee $3,000 $2,000 $1,000 5 minis / 50 micros
$100K $99 Standard / $149 No Activation Fee ($129 with a DLL) $149 Standard / $0 No Activation Fee $6,000 $3,000 $2,000 10 minis / 100 micros
$150K $199 Standard / $229 No Activation Fee ($199 with a DLL) $149 Standard / $0 No Activation Fee $9,000 $4,500 $3,000 15 minis / 150 micros

Drawdown works the same on every Combine size: the maximum loss limit moves up based on your end-of-day balance and never moves back down, but it is monitored in real time, so unrealized drawdown can breach it mid-session. A 50% consistency target applies in the Combine (best winning day at or below 50% of the profit target, so $1,500 on the $50K). The optional daily loss limit (added at checkout) auto-liquidates the position and locks the account for the rest of that day, but DLL is not a rule violation, the account stays open and can resume the next session. A daily loss limit added when you buy the Combine also doubles your later XFA payout caps, under a limited-time offer Topstep started on June 2, 2026.

I have personally run 6 $50K Combines since 2023. The $100K and $150K Combine specs come from Topstep's published Help Center documentation. For a deeper rule-by-rule walkthrough see the Topstep Trading Combine rules guide and the Topstep rules overview.

Express Funded Account, the Feb 5 2026 dual-path

The Express Funded Account (XFA) is the simulated funded stage between the Combine and the Live Funded Account. As of February 5, 2026, XFA operates as a dual-path product:

XFA pathPayout eligibilityDrawdownMax payout per request (since Apr 28, 2026)
Standard Path 5 winning days of $150+ net (non-consecutive) EOD-trail 50% of balance, up to $2,000 / $3,000 / $5,000 by size
Consistency Path 3 trading days at or below a 40% consistency target EOD-trail 50% of balance, up to $3,000 / $4,000 / $6,000 by size

Both paths use a trailing EOD maximum loss limit that locks at $0 once profits push the floor up (the XFA starts at a $0 balance, the 50K/100K/150K label is buying power, not a starting balance). Both paths share the same XFA pricing. The Consistency Path is faster (3 trading days, 40% consistency target) and carries higher payout caps, the Standard Path requires five $150+ winning days but has no consistency rule at all. Traders who held XFA accounts before February 5, 2026 ran on the original single-path structure; the dual-path is the post-February-5 default.

Full mechanics in the Topstep Express Funded Account guide.

Live Funded Account, real money

The Live Funded Account is Topstep's real-money stage. FCM-backed via the firm's broker partnerships, the Live Funded Account is a genuine simulated-to-live progression that most peer firms do not publicly run.

  • Account size: the average of the account sizes of all active, eligible Express Funded Accounts with at least one Payout, rounded up to the next tier ($50K, $100K, or $150K). Without a Payout yet, all active XFAs are averaged instead. Topstep's own example: four 50K XFAs plus one 150K XFA average to 70K and round up to a $100K Live Funded Account.
  • Starting balance: 20% of the trader's combined XFA balances is tradable at activation and 80% sits in reserve, with a $10,000 minimum that Topstep tops up from the reserve. The starting balance is capped at the account size, so no more than $100,000 can move into a $100K Live Funded Account and the excess is forfeited.
  • Reserve unlocks: the reserve releases in 25% increments each time cumulative Live profit reaches a milestone equal to the size's Combine profit target ($3,000 / $6,000 / $9,000 by size).
  • Daily Payout unlock: 30 winning Live days at $150+ net profit unlock daily Payout requests (winning days from the Express Funded Account do not count). Reserve access is a separate mechanic, released at profit thresholds.
  • Selection rate: 0.71% of XFA traders advanced to Live in the 2025 published cohort.

Live profit split is 90/10 trader/firm under the post-January-12-2026 structure. The Live Funded Account is the rarest stage to reach in the Topstep funnel, and Topstep's transparency in publishing the 0.71% XFA-to-Live advance rate (2025 stat) is honest in a way many peer firms do not match.

Reset Credit Bank

Topstep's reset structure changed at some point before April 2026: Combines no longer auto-reset on subscription renewal. Each monthly renewal adds one Reset Credit to the trader's Reset Bank, matched to the account size and path. Reset fees are published in the help center: $49/$99/$199 by size on the Standard path, $95/$149/$229 on the No-Activation-Fee path; the in-app pricing is the binding number at purchase. Reset Credit mechanics are covered in the Topstep pricing breakdown.

Discount codes and PTV affiliate

Topstep does NOT have a PTV affiliate program as of August 2026. There is no VIBES code, no PTV-exclusive discount, and no affiliate-routed signup link. Topstep does run occasional public promotional pricing on its own marketing channels (sitewide sales, holiday discounts), and those are available to all sign-ups regardless of referral path. Coverage of public promo windows lives in the Topstep discount codes guide.

Drawdown mechanics, the rule that defines Topstep

Drawdown differs by stage. This is the single biggest rule-set divergence in the Topstep funnel:

  1. Trading Combine: EOD-trailing MLL with real-time breach monitoring. The maximum loss limit floor moves up on end-of-day balances and never back down, while breaches count in real time on unrealized P&L. A wick into the floor at any point during the session breaks the account, even if the trader closes the day green. This is the strictest drawdown mechanic in the Topstep stack and the one most likely to end a Combine run prematurely.
  2. Express Funded Account: EOD-trailing MLL. The MLL floor trails the highest end-of-day balance only, but breaches count in real time, including unrealized P&L, exactly like on the Combine (per Topstep's help center, checked August 2026). An intraday wick that touches the current floor closes the XFA. Once profits push the floor up to lock at $0 (the simulated funded equivalent of starting balance), the floor is permanent.
  3. Live Funded Account: dynamic risk framework. The Live stage runs on a firm-allocated dynamic risk framework rather than a fixed trailing floor. Real-capital execution, Risk Management oversight, and tradable-balance progression as cumulative profit unlocks reserves.

The Combine MLL, with its real-time breach monitoring, is the rule that most defines my execution. I size every trade against the live floor rather than against the day-open balance. Worked example on a $50K Combine: starting balance $50,000, starting MLL $48,000. A green session closing at $51,500 moves the floor to $49,500. The next session must respect the new $49,500 floor at every intraday tick, not just at the close.

Trading hours and the 3:10 PM CT flatten rule

Topstep is a day trading program, and this is the rule that frames every other one. All positions must be closed by 3:10 PM CT every weekday, and trading resumes at 5:00 PM CT. There is no swing trading and nothing is held overnight or over the weekend. Open positions and pending orders begin to cancel automatically at 3:10 PM CT and Risk Managers start flattening at 3:08 PM CT, but the Help Center is explicit that being flat in time is the trader's responsibility, not the platform's. Products with an earlier daily close have to be exited before that product's close. The week runs from the Sunday open at 5:00 PM CT to the Friday close at 3:10 PM CT, with no weekend session. The same Help Center line reads "No Forex", which means spot forex: FX futures are on the product list and are tradable.

Daily loss limit (Combine)

SizeDaily loss limit (optional add-on)
$50K $1,000
$100K $2,000
$150K $3,000

The Daily Loss Limit is optional on the Trading Combine and the Express Funded Account. It is picked at checkout, either when you buy the Combine or when you activate or reactivate an Express Funded Account, cannot be changed or removed afterwards, and a Combine-checkout DLL travels with the account into the Express Funded Account. On the Live Funded Account it is automatic and mandatory. When it is hit, open positions are liquidated and the account is locked for the rest of that day. The reset is at 5 PM CT, the start of the new CME Globex session. Hitting the Daily Loss Limit is a temporary violation, not a rule violation: the account stays open and the trader resumes the next session. This is gentler than firms that count a daily-loss hit against the pass record.

Consistency rule

Topstep enforces a 50% consistency rule during the Combine: the best winning day must stay at or below 50% of the Profit Target, a fixed $1,500 on the $50K. On the Express Funded Account it depends on your path: no consistency rule on the Standard Path, a 40% target on the Consistency Path. Going over in the Combine is not a fail and not a breach: the Profit Target rises to best day divided by 0.50, so you keep trading toward the higher number. On the XFA Consistency Path a ratio above 40% means the payout request does not qualify yet, and more net profit brings the ratio back down. The full mechanic and worked examples are in the Topstep consistency rule guide.

Winning day threshold

A winning day at Topstep is a session with at least $150 net profit. This applies to the qualifying-day count for XFA payout eligibility (5 winning days of $150+ on the Standard Path; the Consistency Path counts 3 trading days at or below a 40% consistency target) and to the 30-day count that unlocks daily Payouts on the Live Funded Account. Older marketing claims referencing a $200 threshold are outdated.

News trading

Topstep does not publish a mandatory blackout window around major economic releases, and it does not require you to flatten positions during them in SIM or funded accounts. Traders can enter during NFP, CPI, FOMC, GDP, and other high-impact prints. What is not free is the size: purposefully trading your full Maximum Position Size directly into a scheduled major news event sits on Topstep's Prohibited Trading Strategies list, so the permission covers timing and not position size. Topstep itself recommends using caution or stepping aside when a release that affects your product is coming up, and trades hit by an economic release are not eligible for exceptions or Reset credits. The real-time MLL monitoring still applies, a wick during a release print can break the account just as it can during normal session liquidity. The session-close rules continue to apply, including the 3:10 PM CT flatten deadline. Always verify the live policy in the Help Center before trading a release on a funded account.

Prohibited trading strategies

Topstep publishes seven named prohibited trading strategies, a list the firm itself frames as examples rather than exhaustive, and it is checked before Payouts. Account stacking: trading aggressively, hitting the Maximum Loss Limit in one account, switching to the next and repeating until a large win lands. Intentionally depleting a Live Funded Account to force a failure. Any trade that conflicts with the Terms of Use or the Trading Combine terms and conditions. Unfair technology, meaning software, AI, ultra-high-speed systems, or mass data entry that manipulates or abuses the platform. Trading outside real market behavior. Placing orders outside the current best bid or offer. And purposefully trading your full Maximum Position Size directly into a scheduled major news event. Holding several Trading Combines is not on that list and is explicitly allowed; what is prohibited is the burn-and-switch pattern, not the account count.

A second list covers exploiting the simulator, and it is the half most articles skip: scalping algorithms built around unrealistic SIM fills, hundreds of rapid trades to take advantage of preferential queue position, reckless trades in gapped markets to profit from stray fills, repeatedly exploiting the relative lack of slippage in SIM to get stop executions live markets would not give, and tight brackets or auto-breakeven used to take advantage of favorable SIM fills. That last one is worth flagging, because TopstepX ships exactly those tools. Topstep draws the line at intent and scale, though: the behavior it targets is intentional and systematic, in its own words usually hundreds or thousands of trades per day, and it states that a few lucky fills will not get a Payout rejected. A bracket or a breakeven stop inside a normal trading plan is not what this rule is about. Full rule-by-rule detail in the Topstep rules overview.

VPN policy: prohibited outright

VPN use is prohibited at Topstep. The Prohibited Conduct article is explicit: "Do not use a VPN. VPNs, proxy services, TOR, geo-location obfuscation, and other identity-masking services are not permitted at Topstep. If you see an Error 403 Forbidden message, disable your VPN or proxy and try again." The TopstepX API rule states that all trading activity must originate from your personal device, and VPS, VPNs and remote servers are prohibited by the Terms of Use. Traders must disable VPN during KYC and identity verification (timezone and location issues). VPN is also a default item in Topstep's general troubleshooting (alongside ad blockers and browser extensions).

Topstep has no grey zone, the ban is bright-line.

Copy trading

Copy trading is allowed via TopstepX with restrictions:

  • Configured under TopstepX → Settings → Copy Trading.
  • All trading activity must originate from the trader's personal device, no remote VPS.
  • Cross-account hedging is prohibited (separate from copy).
  • When an XFA payout request is submitted, TopstepX automatically unlinks Follower accounts; reconnect them manually after the deduction completes and the balance updates.
  • Topstep recommends verifying copy settings at session start.

The automatic unlink at payout submission is the gotcha most surface-level articles miss.

Maximum contracts

Contract limits scale with account size:

SizeMinisMicros
$50K 5 50
$100K 10 100
$150K 15 150

Micros count proportionally toward the mini limit. Detailed breakdown in the Topstep maximum contracts guide.

Restricted countries

Topstep publishes two fully enumerated lists in its Help Center. One names 34 entries that are not eligible at all (Afghanistan, Belarus, Cuba, Iran, Kenya, Kosovo, Morocco, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Syria, Turkey, Ukraine and others). The second names 25 countries that are limited to the Express Funded Account: traders there can pass a Combine, earn Express Funded Accounts and take up to $200,000 in total Payouts, but cannot receive a Live Funded Account. Germany is on that second list, which matters for readers here. Select traders from those countries may be considered for the Pro Account track. Verify your own status before purchase to avoid KYC friction at first Payout. Full breakdown in the Topstep restricted countries guide.

Payout mechanics summary

  • Maximum payout request: since April 28, 2026: 50% of account balance, capped at $2,000/$3,000 on the 50K, $3,000/$4,000 on the 100K, and $5,000/$6,000 on the 150K by Standard/Consistency path. Applies per request on the XFA; Live Funded payouts carry no dollar cap, though each request is still limited to 50% of the balance until 30 winning days unlock daily payouts.
  • First payout: no minimum profit floor; minimum payout $125; subsequent requests must be net positive since the last payout, and the winning-day count (5 on Standard, 3 on Consistency) restarts from scratch after every payout.
  • Timeline: same day via Prop-to-Brokerage (requested by 12 PM CT), instant via Aeropay, 1-3 business days via Wise or ACH, 5-10 via Wire/SWIFT. Internal approval can take 1 to 3 business days, then the rail runs. US requests on Aeropay are often auto approved and land the same session.
  • Methods: Prop-to-Brokerage (US, free), Aeropay (US, free), Wise (international, free), ACH ($30 fee), Wire/SWIFT ($30 fee).
  • Profit split (post Jan 12, 2026 sign-ups): flat 90/10 trader/firm from $1.
  • Profit split (grandfathered, joined the new dashboard before Jan 12, 2026): 100% of the first $10,000 in lifetime profits, counted per trader, then 90/10.

Detailed payout mechanics in the Topstep payout rules guide.

Responsible Trading Program and Focused Trader Program

Two programs sit above the account rules, and the risk team assigns them rather than the trader choosing them. The Responsible Trading Program follows patterns such as several accounts hitting the maximum loss limit on the same day, constant maximum sizing, no stops, or tilt trading. While it runs, every new Combine and Express Funded Account carries an automatic daily loss limit of $1,000, $2,000 or $3,000 by size, up to five Express Funded Accounts stay available, and payouts run every three trading days up to the cap of the path the account sits on, which for accounts opened during the program is the Consistency cap ($3,000 on a 50K, $4,000 on a 100K, $6,000 on a 150K), never more than 50% of the balance. A Combine bought before the placement keeps its Standard status and can still be activated on either path; a Combine reset during the program follows the Consistency path. The exit is not a waiting period: it takes reaching the Live Funded Account and building $10,000 of profit there.

The Focused Trader Program is the escalation. Its Corrective Path closes every account, allows a single 50K account for six months, refunds nothing and denies pending payouts; triggers include hedging to obtain funding, excessive recycling of Combines or funded accounts, and several lost Live accounts. Its Slowdown Path leaves existing accounts running but blocks new purchases, and it follows excessive resets and overtrading. Neither program appears on the checkout page, which is exactly why it belongs here.

TopstepX: the only official Topstep platform (August 2026)

TopstepX is the only trading platform Topstep offers (Help Center, checked August 2026). Two connections sit alongside it: Quantower can log in with TopstepX credentials on the Trading Combine and the Express Funded Account (not on the Live Funded Account), and API access runs through ProjectX, billed separately from the Topstep subscription.

  • TopstepX, the proprietary web-based platform. Charts with TradingView drawing tools built in, 50+ futures (indices ES/NQ/RTY, currencies, energy, metals, agriculture, fixed income), The Tilt sentiment indicator, personal Daily Loss Limits and Profit Targets, trade limits (daily/weekly), account lockout, Training Camp interactive education, Trade Copier, hotkeys, and DOM. The April 1, 2026 acquisition of The Futures Desk is bringing additional tech into TopstepX.
  • Quantower, connected with TopstepX credentials. Topstep documents the Quantower connection for the Trading Combine and the Express Funded Account only; the Live Funded Account stays on TopstepX. Connection steps in the Topstep Quantower connection instructions.
  • TopstepX API via ProjectX. API access to TopstepX is powered by ProjectX and billed separately from the Topstep subscription. Automated trading through the ProjectX API is prohibited on the Live Funded Account.

I have personally configured TopstepX and NinjaTrader on Topstep accounts. TopstepX has been my preferred platform since launch.

TFD acquisition and TopstepX

The April 1, 2026 acquisition of The Futures Desk by Topstep is the platform-side news of the year. Founders Michael Patak (Topstep CEO) and Josh Schwartzberg (TFD founder) announced the integration with the tagline "Welcome to the next era." TFD's tech is being integrated into TopstepX, with specific features rolling out over 2026. The deal also brings TFD founder Josh Schwartzberg into the Topstep leadership, which makes it a capital-deployment signal as much as a platform one.

Which platform to pick

TopstepX is the platform every Topstep account runs on, with TradingView drawing tools built into its charts and the personal-discipline tools (DLLs, trade limits, account lockout) that the proprietary stack offers. Quantower is the option for traders who want their own charting front end on a Combine or Express Funded Account, using TopstepX credentials. The ProjectX API covers automation on the Combine and the Express Funded Account, but not on the Live Funded Account.

The full platforms pillar is the Topstep trading platforms guide.

Topstep Brokerage

Topstep also runs a separate retail brokerage product: Topstep Brokerage. This is a trade-your-own-money brokerage backed by FCM partner Plus500US, running on the TopstepX platform. Commissions are $0.50 per side on standard contracts, approval is roughly one business day, and funding is via instant debit card. This is not a prop product, it is for traders who already have personal capital and want to use the Topstep tools. Real-money execution on the Live Funded Account routes through the same FCM partnership. The Topstep Brokerage existence is a credibility signal for the prop side (FCM partnership, real broker-dealer infrastructure), but it is a separate offering and not a substitute for the Combine and Funded Account funnel. The Topstep Brokerage existence is a credibility signal for the prop side (FCM partnership, real broker-dealer infrastructure), but it is a separate offering and not a substitute for the Combine and Funded Account funnel.

Strategy framework at Topstep

The Topstep rule framework rewards disciplined day traders who respect the MLL, the Combine's 50% consistency target, and the $150 winning day threshold. The MLL works the same on Combine and XFA: the floor moves up only at the end of each trading day, but it is monitored in real time, and both realized and unrealized P&L count against it (per Topstep's help center, checked August 2026). Position sizing must be calibrated against that floor at all times, an open drawdown can liquidate you mid-session even if you would have closed the day green.

First-payout strategy on the $50K Combine

Since April 28, 2026 XFA payout requests are capped at 50% of account balance, up to $2,000 (Standard) or $3,000 (Consistency) on the $50K size, and the first payout has no minimum profit floor. The strategy implication is meaningful: a trader passing the $50K Combine and reaching XFA can request as soon as the eligibility days are logged, with a $125 minimum payout. Full first-payout playbook in the Topstep first payout strategy guide.

Working around the consistency target

The target catches a concentrated edge rather than a risky one. A trader whose system produces one outsized day surrounded by smaller days ends up with a raised Profit Target and more profit left to build. Practical workaround on $50K: keep every single day at or below $1,500 in the Combine, which is 50% of the $3,000 profit target, and if you pick the XFA Consistency Path, keep the largest day under 40% of total net profit. On the XFA Standard Path there is no consistency rule at all, just five $150+ winning days.

Sizing news trades

The prohibited-strategy line on news is about size, not timing: it bans trading your full Maximum Position Size directly into a scheduled major news event. What makes a news print expensive is the MLL. The floor only lifts at end of day, but a breach counts in real time, including unrealized P&L. A volatile print (CPI, NFP, FOMC) can produce a wick that liquidates the account intraday even if the trade would have recovered by the close. Sized-down news entries are the prudent default on both Combine and XFA, and Topstep itself recommends caution or stepping aside on releases that affect your product.

Beginner path

Topstep's $50K Combine at $49 per month is the natural beginner entry into futures prop. The smaller account size, lower DLL, and 5-mini contract limit keep risk contained while a new trader builds the qualifying-day count and the consistency-rule discipline that the firm enforces. Beginners should start on TopstepX (the default platform), use the personal DLL feature inside TopstepX as a tighter day-ender than the optional $1K checkout DLL.

Scaling and multi-account

Topstep allows an unlimited number of Trading Combines and up to 5 active Express Funded Accounts, with size-specific contract limits and combined DLL behavior. Pass a Combine while you are already at the 5-account limit and the new XFA goes on hold until one closes; an XFA with no trading activity for more than 30 days may be closed. Multi-account scaling is allowed but cross-account hedging is prohibited. Copy trading via TopstepX is allowed under the rules covered in the copy trading rules guide, with the automatic unlink of Follower accounts at XFA payout submission as the key gotcha. The Live Funded Account is the cap on real-capital scaling: exactly one at a time, sized as the rounded-up average of your active eligible XFA account sizes, and the call-up closes every XFA you hold.

The longest continuous operating record in retail futures prop

Topstep was founded in 2012 in Chicago by Michael Patak. As of August 2026 the firm holds the longest continuous operating record in retail futures prop trading. The longevity matters in a market where many newer firms have launched and folded within 18-24 months. Topstep's track record covers multiple market regimes (the 2020 COVID volatility, the 2022 rates cycle, the 2024-2025 macro normalization) and the firm has maintained its core product structure across that span.

Cohort transparency

Topstep publishes 2025 cohort metrics directly on its marketing site:

  • 16.8% Combine pass rate
  • 51.8% advance from any-Combine pass to Funded Level
  • 33.3% of Funded Level traders received payouts
  • 0.71% of XFA traders advanced to the Live Funded Account

This transparency is rare in the futures prop market. Most peer firms do not publish equivalent advance rates. The 0.71% Live advance rate is uncomfortable to read but honest, it sets correct expectations for traders evaluating the Topstep funnel.

Trustpilot signal in context

Topstep's Trustpilot rating is 3.6/5 across 14,532 reviews as of August 2, 2026. This is the lowest among PTV-mature firms (Lucid 4.5-4.6, Tradeify 4.6, FundedNext 4.5, YRM Prop 3.7). The honest framing: 14,532 reviews represent years of operating volume and complaint surface area, not a sample of recent service quality. Newer firms with 200-2,000 reviews benefit from a smaller and more selected reviewer base. Topstep's 3.6 sits in a normal range for a firm with that much operational history. Detailed analysis in the Topstep Trustpilot reviews guide.

Why traders leave Topstep

Documented reasons traders churn from Topstep, covered in the why traders leave Topstep guide:

  • Real-time MLL monitoring breaks accounts on unrealized wicks even though the floor moves end-of-day (the single biggest reason).
  • Monthly subscription pricing stacks against long evaluations.
  • No PTV affiliate discount.
  • Newer firms with one-time-fee pricing are competitively attractive.
  • 0.71% Live Funded advance rate is sobering.

The honest churn analysis is part of the trust story. Topstep's response is the TFD acquisition (platform investment), the dual-path XFA (faster-progression flexibility), and the Reset Credit Bank (subscription-friendly).

Payout proof

I have documented multiple payouts of my own on the $50K Combine since 2023, all cleared via Wise. Wise is the rail I default to as an international trader. My cycles cleared quickly after eligibility; the Help Center currently lists Wise at 1-3 business days, with same-day Prop-to-Brokerage and instant Aeropay available for US traders.

KYC and verification

KYC is required before payout. Topstep's verification flow is comparable to other major futures props: government-issued ID, address verification, and (where applicable) bank or wallet verification for the chosen payout rail. KYC is not required at sign-up; it is triggered at the first payout request.

Topstep vs Apex

Apex and Topstep are the two earliest major futures prop firms, both with multi-year track records. Apex has moved aggressively toward one-time-fee pricing in the Apex 4.0 era, while Topstep continues on monthly subscription. Apex's Rithmic-routed platform stack is broader and includes options unavailable at Topstep. Topstep's edge is the Live Funded Account stage (Apex does not publicly run a real-capital tier in the same documented way), a first payout with no profit floor, and the longest track record in retail futures prop. Pick Apex for one-time-fee pricing and platform breadth; pick Topstep for the Live progression and brand longevity.

Topstep vs YRM Prop

YRM Prop is the structurally newest entry in this comparison set, launched in 2025 with one-time-fee Starter Challenge pricing ($132 for $50K, homepage list checked Aug 3, 2026), Trailing EOD drawdown that locks at starting balance on every product, and a Live Account stage at the top. Topstep has the longest track record in this set vs YRM's ~1 year, a first payout with no profit floor (per-request caps of $2,000-$3,000 on $50K since April 28, 2026, vs YRM's $1,500 first cap), and the deeper community and cohort transparency. YRM has the structurally friendlier evaluation rule set (no DLL on Starter, EOD-trailing drawdown, one-time fee) and the 50% VIBES affiliate discount. Pick Topstep for incumbency and the no-profit-floor first payout; pick YRM for the friendlier evaluation rules and the one-time-fee certainty.

Topstep vs Lucid Trading

Lucid Trading is PTV's number-one traffic firm with a Trustpilot rating in the 4.5-4.6 range that contrasts directly with Topstep's 3.6. Both run EOD-trailing floors; Topstep monitors breaches in real time against unrealized P&L, while Lucid evaluates on closing balances that locks at the starting balance. Lucid is younger (~1 year) with a smaller review base; Topstep has the longest track record and 14,532 reviews. Lucid offers a 40% VIBES affiliate discount; Topstep does not. Pick Lucid for the higher Trustpilot signal and the affiliate discount; pick Topstep for the brand longevity and the Live Funded progression. Detailed in the multi-way Lucid Trading vs Apex vs Topstep.

Topstep vs Tradeify

Tradeify uses one-time pricing on Growth, Select and Lightning and has a separate Elite Live program. Topstep has the longer operating history, broader payout-rail set and its own FCM-backed Live Funded progression. Pick by the exact evaluation, funded and live rule set rather than legacy bonus framing.

Topstep vs MyFundedFutures

MyFundedFutures is a NinjaTrader-led futures prop with comparable cohort metrics to Topstep at smaller scale. Topstep has the longer operating history, the proprietary TopstepX platform, and the Live Funded stage. MyFundedFutures has its own product structure and may offer different payout cadence.

Topstep vs Take Profit Trader

Take Profit Trader is a one-time-fee futures prop with intraday-trailing drawdown. Topstep's edge is the longer track record and the Live Funded progression; TPT's edge is the one-time-fee structure. Detailed in Take Profit Trader vs Topstep.

Decision matrix

  • Pick Topstep if: brand longevity is your top filter, you want a first payout with no profit floor, you value a real Live Funded Account progression, you trust published cohort transparency, or you prefer the proprietary TopstepX platform with TradingView drawing tools in its charts and personal-discipline tools.
  • Pick a peer firm if: you want one-time-fee evaluation pricing, you want EOD-trailing drawdown on the evaluation phase, you want a PTV affiliate discount (YRM 50%, Lucid 40%, others), or you want a higher Trustpilot signal at the top of the consideration set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Topstep legit?

Yes. Topstep is the longest-running major futures prop firm, founded in 2012 in Chicago by Michael Patak, FCM-backed via Plus500US for the Topstep Brokerage retail product, with 14,532 Trustpilot reviews (August 2, 2026) and a 2025 cohort showing 33.3% of Funded Level traders receiving payouts. I have traded the $50K Combine since 2023 with recurring payouts cleared via Wise.

How much does Topstep cost?

Trading Combine pricing is $49 per month for $50K, $99 per month for $100K, and $199 per month for $150K (Standard Path; a No-Activation-Fee Path runs $95/$149/$229 with $0 activation, and a Daily Loss Limit added at checkout takes $10/$20/$30 a month off that under the Responsible Trading Discount), plus a one-time $149 activation fee on the Standard Path when you pass and move to the Express Funded Account. Reset Credits accrue with each subscription renewal rather than a flat reset fee. There is no PTV affiliate discount. Full pricing in the Topstep pricing breakdown.

What is the Topstep profit split in 2026?

For traders who joined the new Topstep dashboard on or after January 12, 2026, the split is a flat 90% trader / 10% Topstep from the first dollar of profit. Traders who joined that dashboard before January 12, 2026 are grandfathered into the older structure: 100% to the trader on their first $10,000 in lifetime profits, then 90/10 thereafter. Earlier marketing claims about 50/50 splits on the first $5K are outdated and incorrect for current sign-ups.

What is the Topstep drawdown type?

The maximum loss limit works the same on Combine and Express Funded Account: the floor moves up based on your end-of-day balance and never back down, but breaches are monitored in real time, including unrealized P&L, so a wick can still liquidate you mid-session (per Topstep's help center, checked August 2026). The Combine floor locks once it reaches your starting balance; the XFA floor locks at $0. The Live Funded Account runs on a dynamic risk framework. Optional Daily Loss Limits of $1K/$2K/$3K by size can be added at checkout, and adding one when you buy the Combine doubles your later XFA payout caps, under a limited-time offer Topstep started on June 2, 2026. The doubled cap figures are in the payout section of this page.

How do Topstep payouts work?

Payouts are requested through the Express Funded Account or Live Funded Account once eligibility is reached. Since April 28, 2026 each XFA payout request is capped at 50% of account balance up to $2,000-$6,000 by size and path, with no profit floor on the first payout and a $125 minimum; Live Funded payouts carry no dollar cap, though each request is still limited to 50% of the account balance until 30 winning days unlock daily payouts of the full unlocked balance. Methods are Prop-to-Brokerage (same day), Aeropay (instant), Wise (1-3 business days), ACH, and Wire/SWIFT. Internal approval can take 1 to 3 business days, then the rail runs. US requests on Aeropay are often auto approved and land the same session. Full payout mechanics in the Topstep payout rules guide.

What is the Topstep winning day threshold?

$150 net profit per day. A trading day with at least $150 in net profit counts toward your qualifying-day count for payouts and Live progression. Older marketing claims that referenced a $200 threshold are outdated and should not be relied on for current rule planning.

What platforms does Topstep support in 2026?

TopstepX is the only trading platform Topstep offers (proprietary, web-based, charts with TradingView drawing tools, The Tilt sentiment, personal DLLs and trade limits). Quantower can connect with TopstepX credentials on the Trading Combine and the Express Funded Account, and API access runs through ProjectX, billed separately. The tech from the April 1, 2026 acquisition of The Futures Desk is being integrated into TopstepX. Full platforms pillar in the Topstep trading platforms guide.

Does Topstep allow VPN?

No. Topstep explicitly prohibits VPNs. Its Prohibited Conduct article states: "Do not use a VPN.

Does Topstep allow news trading?

Topstep does not publish a mandatory blackout window around major news releases and does not require you to flatten for them. Traders can enter during NFP, CPI, FOMC, and other high-impact prints, but purposefully trading your full Maximum Position Size directly into a scheduled major news event is on the Prohibited Trading Strategies list, so the freedom covers timing and not size. Topstep recommends caution or stepping aside when a release affects your product, and trades affected by a release are not eligible for exceptions or Reset credits. The real-time MLL monitoring still applies on the Combine, and the rules around the session close still hold. Always verify the live policy in the Help Center before trading a release on a funded account.

What is the Trading Combine?

The Trading Combine is Topstep's one-step evaluation. Three sizes: $50K with a $3,000 profit target, $100K with a $6,000 target, and $150K with a $9,000 target. Pass conditions include a 50% consistency target (best winning day at or below 50% of the profit target, so $1,500 on the $50K; going over raises the Profit Target to best day divided by 0.50 instead of failing the account) and respect for the maximum loss limit (the floor moves at end of day, breaches count in real time); a daily loss limit only applies if you add the optional DLL at checkout. Pass and you activate an Express Funded Account. Full guide in the Topstep Trading Combine rules article.

What is the Express Funded Account?

The Express Funded Account (XFA) is the simulated funded stage between the Combine and the Live Funded Account. As of February 5, 2026, XFA runs as a dual-path product: the Standard Path requires 5 winning days of $150 or more, while the Consistency Path requires 3 trading days at or below a 40% consistency target (the old cumulative-profit minimums were removed on April 28, 2026). Both paths use an EOD-trailing maximum loss limit and the same XFA pricing. Full mechanics in the Topstep Express Funded Account guide.

What is the Live Funded Account?

The Live Funded Account is Topstep's real-money stage, FCM-backed via the firm's broker partnerships. Two numbers define it and they come from different places. The account size is the average of the account sizes of your active, eligible Express Funded Accounts with at least one Payout, rounded up to $50K, $100K, or $150K; without a Payout yet, all active XFAs are averaged. The starting balance is 20% of your combined XFA balances with 80% held in reserve, a $10,000 minimum topped up from the reserve, and anything above the account size forfeited. The reserve unlocks in 25% increments at profit milestones equal to the size's Combine profit target. Payout eligibility is not tied to those reserve unlocks: you can take payouts while part of your balance is still in reserve. Thirty winning Live days at $150+ unlock daily Payout requests; Express Funded winning days do not count toward that total. The call-up itself is a Risk Team decision made case by case, it cannot be declined, and when it comes all Express Funded Accounts close; while a Live Funded Account is active, a passed Combine cannot be activated into a new XFA. Traders in the 25 countries that can earn an Express Funded Account but not a Live Funded Account, Germany among them, are capped at $200,000 in total payouts. The 2025 cohort selection rate from XFA to Live was 0.71%.

How does the Reset Credit Bank work?

Topstep changed its reset structure so that Combines no longer auto-reset on subscription renewal. Instead, each monthly renewal adds one Reset Credit to the trader's Reset Bank, matched to the account size and path. The exact dollar value of an out-of-credit reset varies by size and path. This is a unique structure compared with YRM (flat-priced resets, $90 to $265 by size per the firm's homepage, checked Aug 3, 2026) and Apex (per-reset fee).

Does Topstep allow copy trading?

Yes, copy trading is available through TopstepX, configured under Settings → Copy Trading, with the recommendation to verify settings at session start. Cross-account hedging remains prohibited. When an XFA payout request is submitted, TopstepX automatically unlinks Follower accounts; reconnect them manually after the deduction completes and the balance updates. All trading activity must originate from the trader's personal device, no remote VPS.

What countries are restricted from Topstep?

Topstep publishes two enumerated lists in its Help Center: 34 entries that are not eligible at all, and 25 countries limited to the Express Funded Account. Germany is on the second list, so German traders can pass a Combine, earn Express Funded Accounts and take up to $200,000 in total Payouts, but do not get a Live Funded Account. Verify your country status before purchase. Full breakdown in the Topstep restricted countries guide.

Is Topstep worth it in 2026?

If you value brand longevity, the largest community in retail futures prop trading, a first payout with no profit floor, a real Live Funded stage, and the deepest published cohort transparency, yes. If you prioritize one-time-fee pricing, EOD-trailing drawdown on evaluation, or an affiliate-discount entry, peer firms like YRM Prop, Apex 4.0, or Tradeify may fit better. After 6 Combines since 2023 and recurring payouts, Topstep still earns a slot in my rotation. Full alternatives analysis in the why traders leave Topstep guide.

The bottom line

Topstep is the futures prop incumbent in 2026. The longest continuous operating record in retail futures prop trading, FCM partnership via Plus500US for the Topstep Brokerage retail product, the proprietary TopstepX platform with TradingView drawing tools in its charts and personal-discipline tools, and a Live Funded Account stage that most peer firms do not publicly run. The Trading Combine's real-time MLL monitoring is unforgiving, the monthly subscription stacks against long evaluations, the 3.6/5 Trustpilot rating across 14,532 reviews (August 2, 2026) reflects years of operating volume, and there is no PTV affiliate discount. The April 1, 2026 acquisition of The Futures Desk is reshaping TopstepX, the February 5, 2026 dual-path Express Funded Account gives traders meaningful flexibility, the April 28, 2026 payout rework removed the first-payout profit floor, and the five payout rails (Prop-to-Brokerage, Aeropay, Wise, ACH, Wire/SWIFT) cover most jurisdictions. After trading the $50K Combine since 2023 with recurring payouts, Topstep earns its slot in my 2026 rotation. Sign up at the Topstep website for current pricing and Reset Credit Bank details.
