Tested platforms: 3+ years on Topstep across TopstepX (preferred), with NinjaTrader and Tradovate also supported. ProjectX shut down 2026 — replaced by TopstepX, which is getting a tech boost from the April 2026 Futures Desk acquisition. Full platform breakdown in my Topstep platforms guide and main review. Latest at Topstep.
Tradovate is a browser-based futures trading platform you can connect to your Topstep account in under five minutes, with no software installation required. It is one of three officially supported platforms at Topstep as of April 2026, alongside TopstepX and NinjaTrader. For a full comparison of all three options, see the Topstep platform overview.
I have used Tradovate at multiple prop firms over the years. At Topstep, my preferred platform is TopstepX — the TradingView integration and DOM are hard to beat. But Tradovate earns its place: zero-install access from any browser makes it the practical choice when you are working on an unfamiliar machine or want a mobile workflow that actually holds up.
How the connection works
Topstep manages platform credentials centrally. You do not sign up for Tradovate independently — Topstep generates your login.
- Log in to your Topstep dashboard at topstep.com
- Navigate to the Platform Access section
- Select Tradovate from the platform list
- Copy the username and password displayed on screen
- Open a new tab and go to app.tradovate.com
- Sign in using the Topstep-issued credentials (not any personal Tradovate account you may have)
- On the account selector screen, choose the account matching your current Topstep path
That last step matters. Your dashboard will list your Combine, XFA, or Live Funded account. Selecting the wrong one — or accidentally choosing a personal sim account — means your trades will not count toward Topstep targets. Check the account name and size before placing your first order.
Selecting the right account type
Topstep runs three distinct account types, and each is a separate selectable account in Tradovate's interface.
| Account | Path | Drawdown type | Winning day threshold |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trading Combine ($50K / $100K / $150K) | Evaluation | Intraday trailing | $150 net profit |
| Express Funded Account — Standard Path | Post-Combine | EOD trailing, locks at $0 | $150 net profit |
| Express Funded Account — Consistency Path | Post-Combine | EOD trailing, locks at $0 | $150 net profit |
| Live Funded Account | Real-money tier | Real-money rules | $150 net profit |
The drawdown mechanics are enforced at the platform level. On the Combine, the intraday-trailing drawdown tracks your live equity continuously — a sharp unrealized move against you can breach it mid-session. On the XFA (both Standard and Consistency paths), the drawdown only moves at end-of-day close. Understand which account you have selected before sizing up. For more detail on how these mechanisms work, see the Topstep drawdown explained guide.
Browser and system requirements
Tradovate runs in any modern browser. Chrome and Edge offer the most stable experience. No special hardware is required beyond a reliable internet connection.
| Setup | What is needed |
|---|---|
| Browser | Chrome, Edge, Firefox (current versions) |
| Internet | Stable broadband — latency matters for DOM |
| Screen resolution | 1080p or higher recommended for multi-pane layout |
| VPN | Prohibited, Topstep bans VPN on all platforms |
| Mobile | iOS App Store / Google Play (Tradovate app) |
One hard rule: disable any VPN before logging in. Topstep explicitly prohibits VPN use on all platforms, and a VPN-active session triggers an Error 403 Forbidden response. Disable it before connecting and during any KYC steps. For the full policy, see Topstep VPN policy.
Charting in Tradovate
Tradovate's charting is capable without being exceptional. The chart types cover the main use cases, candlestick, bar, line, Renko, Heikin Ashi, and the indicator suite includes the standard set most discretionary traders rely on.
What Tradovate has:
- Moving averages (SMA, EMA, WMA)
- RSI, MACD, Stochastic, CCI
- Bollinger Bands, Keltner Channels
- Volume, VWAP, ATR
- Basic drawing tools: trend lines, horizontal levels, Fibonacci
What Tradovate lacks vs TopstepX:
- No Pine Script, you cannot run custom TradingView scripts
- Smaller indicator library than TopstepX's full TradingView environment
- Less flexible workspace layout (pane resizing is more constrained)
- No equivalent to TopstepX's "Training Camp" or built-in education layer
For traders who rely on a small set of standard indicators and do not need custom scripts, the gap is not material. For traders who rely on Pine Script studies or want deep workspace customization, TopstepX is the stronger environment.
A practical setup for Topstep Combine work: ES or NQ 5-minute chart with VWAP and a 20 EMA as primary orientation tools, plus a 1-minute chart for entry refinement. Add ATR to your chart to calibrate stop placement relative to the Combine's daily loss limit. On the $50K Combine, the daily loss limit is $1,000, knowing current ATR helps you size to avoid accidental DLL hits.
DOM trading in Tradovate
The Tradovate DOM is straightforward and fast. Key features:
- One-click order entry from the ladder, click bid or ask to enter at market
- Bracket orders, set target and stop simultaneously from the DOM
- Order modification, drag target or stop lines directly on the ladder
- Position display, current position size and average entry visible inline
The DOM updates in real time and handles fast markets without visible lag under normal conditions. The interface does not match NinjaTrader's SuperDOM in terms of customization options, NinjaTrader allows more granular ladder configuration and more complex order types. For simple bracket-order entries and exits on ES or NQ, Tradovate's DOM does the job cleanly.
Practical tip for the Combine: Use bracket orders consistently rather than manual exits. The Combine's intraday-trailing drawdown punishes discretionary exits that run against you. A pre-set bracket reduces the chance of a runaway loss that threatens your drawdown floor before you react.
Mobile trading on Tradovate
Tradovate's mobile app is one of its genuine strengths. Available on iOS and Android, the app supports full order entry, live P&L, charting, and DOM access.
Realistic mobile use cases at Topstep:
- Monitoring, check open position P&L while away from desk
- Bracket exits, modify or close a live position if conditions change
- Flat check, confirm you are out of all positions before the session ends
- Light order entry, entering a planned trade in a liquid market at a known level
Full-day trading on mobile is possible but not ideal. Screen real estate limits chart readability, and DOM entry on a phone is slower and more error-prone than on a keyboard. Use mobile as a monitoring and management layer, not a primary trading surface.
Tradovate vs TopstepX vs NinjaTrader, when to choose what
| Factor | Tradovate | TopstepX | NinjaTrader |
|---|---|---|---|
| Install required | No (browser) | No (browser) | Yes (desktop app) |
| Chart quality | Good | Excellent (TradingView) | Excellent |
| Custom indicators | Limited | Pine Script | NinjaScript (C#) |
| DOM quality | Good | Good | Best in class |
| Mobile app | Yes (mature) | Limited | Limited |
| Workspace customization | Moderate | High | Very high |
| Learning curve | Low | Low-medium | Medium-high |
| Best for | Multi-machine / mobile users | Most traders starting fresh | Advanced DOM traders + automation |
My honest take: if you are opening a Topstep account for the first time and have no existing platform preference, start with TopstepX. It has the best chart environment and is where Topstep is investing development resources following the TFD acquisition in April 2026.
Choose Tradovate if: you trade at multiple prop firms and already know the platform, you need zero-install access across multiple machines, or your workflow is mobile-heavy. For context on how copy trading works across platforms, see Topstep copy trading rules.
Choose NinjaTrader if: you rely on custom NinjaScript indicators or require the SuperDOM's advanced order management, see the NinjaTrader setup guide for the full walkthrough.
Common setup errors and troubleshooting
Error: 403 Forbidden on login Cause: VPN is active. Solution: disable VPN, close and reopen the browser tab, log in again.
Error: Credentials not accepted Cause: Using personal Tradovate account credentials instead of Topstep-issued ones. Solution: go back to the Topstep dashboard, find your Tradovate credentials under Platform Access, copy them exactly.
Issue: Trades not counting toward Combine target Cause: Wrong account selected in Tradovate's account switcher. Solution: log out, log back in, and confirm you have selected the account matching your Topstep path (Combine, not personal sim).
Issue: Charts loading slowly Cause: Browser cache buildup, too many tabs open, or ad blocker interfering with Tradovate's WebSocket connection. Solution: clear cache, close unused tabs, disable ad blockers for app.tradovate.com. Also disable any VPN that may be throttling the connection.
Issue: DOM not updating in real time Cause: WebSocket connection dropped, usually a network interruption. Solution: refresh the page. If the issue persists, check your internet connection and ensure no browser extension is blocking WebSocket traffic.
Issue: Mobile app showing different position than web Cause: Brief sync lag between mobile and web sessions. Both sessions update from the same account, the discrepancy typically resolves within seconds. Do not double-enter a trade assuming the first did not execute.
Account rules to keep in mind while trading on Tradovate
Platform choice does not change Topstep's underlying rules. A few that catch Tradovate users:
- Consistency rule: Your best single winning day must stay below 50% of total cycle profit. This applies on the Combine and the XFA. It does not matter which platform you traded on, it is a cumulative P&L rule. See Topstep consistency rule for the full explanation.
- Winning day threshold: A winning day counts as a day with $150 or more in net profit (as of April 2026, this is $150, not $200 as some older PTV articles stated incorrectly).
- Maximum contracts: The $50K Combine limits you to 5 standard futures contracts (or 50 micros). Do not exceed these limits in Tradovate, the platform will not automatically block you. See Topstep maximum contracts.
- No VPN: Covered above, but worth repeating, this is a hard ban, not a soft guideline.
- Copy trading: Allowed through TopstepX's built-in Trade Copier. If you use Tradovate and want to copy trades across accounts, review the rules carefully, cross-account hedging is prohibited. See Topstep copy trading rules.
For the full rule set, see the Topstep rules overview and the Topstep accounts overview.
The bottom line
Tradovate earns a spot in the Topstep platform lineup because of one thing: zero install friction. Browser-based access from any machine, a mature mobile app, and a clean enough trading interface make it the practical pick for multi-location traders or anyone already fluent in the platform.
TopstepX is still my preference at Topstep, the TradingView chart integration is better and the platform is where Topstep's development focus sits post-TFD acquisition. But if your setup benefits from Tradovate's browser-first architecture, the connection process is simple and the trading environment is solid.
Get the credentials from your Topstep dashboard, disable your VPN, select the right account type, and you are trading in five minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Tradovate with Topstep?
Yes. Tradovate is one of three supported platforms at Topstep as of April 2026, alongside TopstepX and NinjaTrader. You connect via the Topstep dashboard, select your Combine or XFA account, and trade directly inside Tradovate's browser environment. No third-party plugin is required.
Do I need to install anything to use Tradovate at Topstep?
No. Tradovate runs entirely in the browser. Open your preferred browser, navigate to app.tradovate.com, log in with your Topstep-linked credentials, and you're trading. There is also a desktop app available for download if you prefer a native window, but it is not required.
How do I connect Tradovate to my Topstep account?
Log in to your Topstep dashboard at topstep.com, navigate to Platform Access, and select Tradovate. Topstep will display your Tradovate login credentials. Use those credentials to sign in at app.tradovate.com. On first login you will select the account type, Combine, XFA, or Live, that corresponds to your current Topstep path.
Which Topstep account types work with Tradovate?
Tradovate works across the Topstep Combine (all three sizes: $50K, $100K, $150K), the Express Funded Account on both the Standard Path and Consistency Path, and the Live Funded Account. Select the correct account in the Tradovate dashboard to ensure the right drawdown rules apply.
Is Tradovate available on mobile?
Yes. Tradovate has native apps for iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play). The mobile app supports full order entry, charting, and DOM trading. It is particularly useful for monitoring open positions and placing bracket orders when away from your desk. Full multi-monitor workspace setup is better suited to the web or desktop version.
Can I use a VPN when trading Tradovate at Topstep?
No. Topstep explicitly prohibits VPN use across all platforms, including Tradovate. A VPN connection triggers Error 403 Forbidden. Disable your VPN before connecting. Also disable it during any KYC or identity verification steps. See Topstep VPN policy for the full policy.
What charts are available in Tradovate?
Tradovate includes candlestick, bar, line, Renko, and Heikin Ashi chart types plus a standard indicator set: moving averages, RSI, MACD, Bollinger Bands, volume, ATR. The library is adequate for most discretionary traders but is smaller than TopstepX's TradingView-powered environment. There is no Pine Script support.
Does Tradovate have a DOM trading ladder?
Yes. Tradovate includes a DOM ladder with one-click order entry, bid/ask stacking, and order modification directly on the ladder. It is responsive and clean. A step below NinjaTrader's SuperDOM in customization but solid for most futures day trading workflows.
Why would I choose Tradovate over TopstepX?
Three main reasons: (1) Zero install on any machine, useful when trading from multiple locations. (2) Familiarity if you already use Tradovate at another firm. (3) Mobile-first workflow, Tradovate's mobile app is more mature. If none of these apply and you are starting fresh, TopstepX is the better-equipped option.
What are the most common setup errors with Topstep and Tradovate?
Three frequent issues: (1) Using personal Tradovate credentials instead of the Topstep-issued ones, always use credentials from the Topstep dashboard. (2) VPN active during login, causing an immediate 403 error. (3) Selecting the wrong account type, double-check the account selector after login.
Does Tradovate support automated or algorithmic trading?
Tradovate has API support for automated strategies. However, Topstep's rules require all trading activity to originate from your personal device without remote access tools. Fully automated strategies that run without manual oversight are in a grey zone, review Topstep's prohibited strategies policy before deploying any automation via Tradovate's API.
Is Tradovate free to use with Topstep?
Platform access is included in your Topstep subscription. You pay the Topstep monthly fee ($49/$99/$149 depending on account size) and the $149 activation fee, and Tradovate access is part of that. You do not pay Tradovate separately for Topstep-sim access.
