Trading During News: Rules, Slippage and a Safer Process

Decide before the release, verify the account rule and recalculate execution risk before any post-news trade.

Quick answer

  • Check the exact account and stage: news permission, hold-through permission and anti-straddling rules can differ.
  • A stop does not guarantee the exit price during a fast market.
  • If you wait after a release, reassess the market. Time alone is not an entry signal.

Scheduled data can thin the book and move the market before an order fills. A correct directional view can still lose if the execution and account drawdown cannot absorb the price gap.

For NQ, the contract is worth $20 per index point and $5 per 0.25-point tick. Five ticks of slippage cost $25 per contract, or $100 across four contracts, before fees. A $2,500 cushion equals 125 NQ points on one contract before fees and other losses.

What the main stop types can and cannot do

CME Stop with ProtectionExecutes within a protection range; remainder can rest at the protection limit

Pre-event workflow

  1. Verify the event on the issuing agency's calendar.
  2. Read the rule for the exact firm, account type and stage.
  3. Cancel working orders that could trigger inside a restricted window.
  4. Close or reduce only according to the decision made in the plan.
  5. Confirm position and order status across copied accounts.

Firm-rule examples

Firm/accountCurrent documented treatment
Lucid Flex / Pro / DirectScheduled and unscheduled news allowed; drawdown rules still apply (Lucid Trading news policy)
LucidDaily fundedFlat from one minute before through one minute after listed high-impact USD events (LucidDaily funded rules)
TakeProfitTrader PRO / PRO+Specified events use a one-minute before/during/one-minute after restriction (TakeProfitTrader PRO rules)
ApexNormal strategy allowed; news exploitation and multidirectional straddling prohibited (Apex trading rules)

Post-event entry gate

Only enter if the setup still meets your plan and the current spread, stop distance and remaining drawdown support the position size. Stay flat if the market is dislocated or the firm's restricted window is still active.

Checked September 9, 2026. Issuing agencies own release times; CME owns order mechanics; each firm owns account restrictions.

Recheck: weekly event review and after any platform, order-type or firm policy change.
